Large appliances

Large appliances should be securely anchored to improve your safety and reduce the chance of damage in the event of an earthquake.  Lock the rollers before beginning.

To anchor the appliance to the wall:

  1. Choose a screw-eye that is sized appropriately for the appliance. For example, a refrigerator requires at least a 3/8-inch diameter screw-eye.*
  2. Connect coated wire cable to the screw-eye at one end and to a snap-hook fastener at the other end.
  3. Attach the cable to the appliance with the snap-hook fastener.
  4. The restraint should be located in the mid- to upper-portion of the appliance.
  5. Replace rigid water or gas connections on large appliances with flexible connectors. Some building codes require professional installation. Check with your local building department.

*For stone or masonry walls:

  • Pre-drill holes
  • Insert plastic anchors
  • Install the screw-eye
